Black Women’s History Week, Day 5: A Black woman artist

Lavett Ballard, Hey Black Child

The week of February 25 to March 3 is Black Women’s History Week; it bridges Black History Month and Women’s History Month. For each day of the week, the team will discuss a different prompt. Today’s theme: a Black woman artist.

Charise: First of all, Amy Sherald. Secondly and local to DC, Trap Bob.

And right now my fave Black woman artist is a woman from Nottingham (UK) named Kim Thompson (she’s on IG as @ kim_a_tron) – I love her because her art feels like home for me. Having felt alone in my so-called weirdness for ages, finding another Black woman lover of horror, punk, rock and kitsch was so validating. Also Nic Cage. Did I mention she shares my love of Nic Cage and awesomely bad movies?

But yeah, I had to mention Amy Sherald because I love her portrait of Michelle Obama, obviously.

*ZZ* Makes Art: Trap Bob is blowing up (as they should) taking over outer space 🪐 (pause) Lavett Ballard.

Tierra: I just bought some canvases, so I can start painting my own work instead of only paint by number. I want my aesthetic to be like Clementine Hunter’s. I love self-taught folk artists! She was also an even more talented quilter, which reminds me of my Grandma.
